October’s alternative birthstone, tourmaline is known as the most versatile gemstone of them all. Tourmaline with red, pink, purplish colors are called "rubellite tourmaline". Rubellite tourmaline varies in color from a deep red to rosy pink and deep purple colors. Often times you may observe a brownish, orangish or purplish hue in these gems! Rubellites are one of the gemstones, where the presence of inclusions is actually a benefit. They are a "Type 2" gem; meaning in most cases they have eye visible inclusions. It measures at 7-7.5 on the Mohs’ hardness scale making them a durable gemstone for all types of jewelry.
